New York State approves largest offshore wind project in the U.S.

A 90 Megawatt Offshore Wind Farm 30 Miles Off the Coast of Long Island Will Create Jobs and Power 50,000 Long Island Homes with Clean, Resilient and Affordable Energy.

New York State made clean energy history on January 25, when the Long Island Power Authority (LIPA) approved a contract for the nation’s largest offshore wind project to be, located in the waters off Eastern Long Island.

The approval is the first step towards meeting a historic commitment announced by Governor Andrew Cuomo earlier this month to put in place enough offshore wind power to light 1.25 million New York homes within 13 years.

"New York leads the nation in pioneering clean energy innovation, and this bold action marks the next step in our unprecedented commitment to offshore wind, as well as our ambitious long term energy goal of supplying half of all electricity from renewable sources by 2030," Governor Cuomo said.

Wind power has struggled to take off in the United States, but the Long Island project signals that the long-awaited promise of a new, lower-carbon source of electricity is poised to become part of the national energy mix. '

“We are at a tipping point in regards to off-shore wind development in the U.S., and it is highly encouraging to see the State of New York take the lead with this commitment. Danish expertise in the field of off-shore wind is world renowned, and we are excited to see a number of Danish companies have begun positioning themselves for these opportunities”, says Andreas Brunsgaard, US General Manager of the Confederation of Danish Industry.

Big multinational developers like Statoil and Dong Energy are also lining up, snapping up leases for ocean parcels with the aim of competing for utility contracts in Maryland, Massachusetts and New York. The Long Island Power Autority announcement follows the auction in December to bid on the development of another New York off-shore lease called the New York lease area, which Statoil won ahead of Dong Energy, and other competitors, forking out $42 million - more than double than the suggested value. The New York State Energy Research and Development Authority is putting together an offshore wind master plan to guide development.

The Master Plan, to be released in late 2017, will show how additional New York coastal sites may be developed responsibly and will set capacity targets and commercial operation dates for each site. The state will continue to work closely with coastal community members, the fishing and maritime industries, environmental advocates and other stakeholders to identify additional offshore wind energy sites to be included in New York’s Offshore Wind Master Plan.

Reforming the Energy Vision (REV) is Governor Andrew M. Cuomo's strategy to lead on climate change and grow New York's economy. REV is building a cleaner, more resilient and affordable energy system for all New Yorkers by stimulating investment in clean technologies like solar, wind, and energy efficiency and generating 50 percent of the state's electricity needs from renewable energy by 2030. Already, REV has driven 730 percent growth in the statewide solar market, enabled over 105,000 low-income households to permanently cut their energy bills with energy efficiency, and created thousands of jobs in manufacturing, engineering, and other clean tech sectors. REV aims to ensure that New York State reduces statewide greenhouse gas emissions 40 percent by 2030 and achieves the internationally-recognized target of reducing emissions 80 percent by 2050.
