Striving to improve health care quality in Colombia

What can the Danish healthcare industry add to the Colombian healthcare? This week, a Danish healthcare delegation is visiting Colombia to discuss opportunities and some of the challenges within the healthcare sector in the country.
During the visit, the Colombian Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs Patti Londoño hosted a lunch at the prior presidential palace, where the Danish companies presented their solutions.

Colombia has significantly improved its health system over the past 20 years, leading to a rise in life expectancy. Almost every Colombian now has access to health care, with coverage nearly quadrupling from 23.5% of the population in 1993 to 96.6% in 2014.

All Colombians have access to the same health care services and have good financial protection from excessive health care spending if they get sick. Out-of-pocket expenditure paid by patients is only 14% of total health spending. This is one of the lowest proportions in Latin America and is lower than the OECD average of 19%. Unmet health care needs and waiting times for medical appointments have been significantly reduced.

However, the Colombian health sector still faces important challenges, namely with improving quality, efficiency and sustainability.

Meeting the Colombian Healthcare System
This week a Danish healthcare delegation is visiting Colombia to discuss opportunities and some of the challenges within the healthcare sector in the country. The delegation mainly consists of the largest Danish healthcare companies, including Lundbeck and Coloplast, but also has the small company Entertainment Robotics.

The Colombians have received the delegation at the highest level at both the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Colombian food and drug agency INVIMA.

Tomorrow, the companies will meet the Colombian patent office, before the program ends.
